Restaurant Review

The West Meets the Mideast
at Shalizar’s

By Bill Anthony

Only in America—where else would you find a “Persian Restaurant” owned by two Mexican guys (Angel Can and Victor Gallardo) with a belly dancer from Puerto Rico and a singer who claims to be from “far away” Lebanon singing Italian songs......the place........Shalizar is located on Foothill Boulevard in La Verne.
This restaurant is a true “find”.........food is fantastic.....ambiance is comfortable and the staff knowledgeable, informative and with a great attitude—working hard in making your experience most enjoyable.
The menu features beef, chicken, lamb, fish and, for sure, a few different kinds of rice. There is a bittersweet cherry rice and a raisin date rice as well as a crusty/crispy rice covered with pomegranate sauce (unbelievably good).
The portions are large (no huge combination plates) and almost the size of platters. The fairly priced entrees are between $12 and $18 and well worth every dollar.
A few of my favorites are as follows:

For Appetizers
• Tadig with Ghemeh Stew or Gormeh Sabzi (rice crust served with stew)
• Kashk-Bademjan (fried eggplant mixed with sauteed onions, garlic and kashk (Persian tahina)
• Dolmeh (grape leaves stuffed with rice, beef, vegetables and raisins)
• Must-o-Khiar (chopped cucumber and herbs in plain yogurt)

For Entrees
Beef
• Chelo Kabob Felfel (chunk of beef filet mignon with bell pepper, onions and tomatoes, skewered and charbroiled)
• Sollani Kabob (combination of beef filet mignon and ground beef, skewered and charbroiled)

Chicken
• Chicken Kabob Keobideh
• Chicken Barg Kabob (Tender)

Lamb
• Baghelli Polo with Lamb Shank
• Chelo Kabob Lamb Chops

After your meal, take my tip.......don’t miss one of the “Persian” desserts.

Shalizar’s is located at 2451 Foothill Boulevard in La Verne. Phone number is (909) 596-7508. On Friday and Saturday nights, starting at 7:00 p.m. there is music and belly dancing—play it safe and make reservations.
